In the process of some audio research I stumbled across the AVS forum which I might have mentioned before.  There is a dedicated thread to building HT s from scratch.  Many are impressive, most very long and quite technical.  But the link below is an extreme in both effort and result and I enjoyed it, particularly the photos.  Lots of info too.  It's really worth looking/reading all 35 pages!

The really astounding thing is they started with a crawl space and excavated for a basement room!

I'm only about half way through that post, but all I can say is what an amazing amount of work that is. I would have thought an addition or separate free standing building would have cost less.

That's way more work than I would want to take on by myself.

It was 2+ years in the making.

Somewhere in the thread he ( Moggie) said the cost of excavation alone was about equal to the cost of a 500~sq. ft. addition.  I'd estimate between excavation and equipment he spent $ 60k on the finished project.  Must really, really like to watch movies and I'd wager no one else in his family could watch a movie or listen to music while he's away.  I'd be very impressed if he created a one button macro on the controlling IPad!  Wait 'till you get to the automation.
