PC Mag top two:

Linksys EA7500 Max-Stream AC1900 MU-MIMO Gigabit Router  $137.33

Trendnet AC2600 StreamBoost MU-MIMO WiFi Router (TEW-827DRU)  $99.99

I've read both reviews, a lot of which is Greek to me.

Update: both choices have very mixed reviews on Amazon, the 0ne star ones are terrible.  My search will continue........

As an aside, I bought George an ASUS like mine, the RT-AC68U, and they have had no difficulty at all.  I'm inclined to think I have a bad unit and maybe the simplest is to buy another.

I was very happy with my RT-AC68U, which unfortunately stopped working with my internet connection. Thankfully it's at least working (quite well) as a repeater.

If I were buying today, I wouldn't think twice about buying another RT-AC68U.

Thanks, that's what I'm going to do.  Amazon is amazing, buy today, get tomorrow.

Any word on the new router? I was going to suggest that you run with the factory settings for a few days to see how that works out for you, aside from renaming the SSID and changing the default password.

The new router is up and running; arrived yesterday at dinner time.  I am essentially using "factory" settings except for the SSID and the DHCP.  My ISP had to clear the old router from my profile and all seems to be fine.  It sees everything on my network and the phone shows maximum signal.  I haven't tried NetFlix yet but will this evening.
Speed test on the phone is 50/50.

It seems to be fine.  Last night I had a little delay once.  But that has been the only glitch, and I have not rebooted since start up.

I'm glad to hear that. Asus for the most part has worked well for me. I've considered and tried other brands including Linksys, but Asus remains my favorite. Too bad it isn't perfect. :)
