  • In an emergency, 9-1-1 calls ME.

I've had my Inova T4 flashlight for several years now. At the time of purchase, it was somewhere close to $100. It has not been on my duty belt for about the last 4 or 5 years; giving way to a Fenix TK11. While at The Home Depot yesterday, I picked up a Rayovac "industrial grade" LED flashlight for $14.99, which came with a couple AA alkaline batteries. A military ID card saved me $1.50 (10%) off of the total. My intent is to use it as an emergency flashlight for our family van.

Once home, I had my Inova T4 in the area, so I took it out back with my new Rayovac. I could not believe the difference. The Rayovac put the T4 to shame in every way. It puts out a nice, strong beam, with a good amount of spill light. The hot spot is strong and tightly focused. The T4, while still a nice flashlight, could not compare.

I also like that the Rayovac is a solid, compact, aluminum flashlight with great rubber moldings on each end. To top it off, it has a low and a high setting that is easily accessible. The T4 has only full power. The Rayovac's AA power center makes for convenient battery replacements when necessary, which should be rare. The box shows 15 hours at high power; 35 hrs on low. Not bad for a single set of batteries.

Scuzzy; what are you waiting for? Go get one.

I finally found a reason to do the 30 minute drive to Home Depot and picked one of these up.  Very impressive.  There is also a  brother, 140 lumens, 3C, and a good deal larger for an extra $10- 24.99 that I might try for the future.

What I'd like to find is a similarly priced LED lantern for general power outages.  Rayovac  shows one at $50 and there is a "sportsman" lite that is just too bright for the living room.  I have a single LED version, $4.95 at local market, that's not bright enough.

I don't know about a dual power level on the lantern, I haven't had one in my hand or noticed in on the packaging.  And I have not really been searching, but if I came across one it would be nice to have.
Don't go out of your way......

That's about the same price as the Rayovac one I passed on.  I am beginning to think the simplest solution is to buy a second of the $4.95 variety I bought in the supermarket and be done with it.  One in the kitchen and a second in the living room should be enough.  I don't anticipate doing surgery using these lights!  The cheap variety is portable and not a big loss if it's broken.

MSRP $399 -499 with 'endurance' battery pack.  Glad I don't need one.
