An Annoying problem, my HTC one's email program has stopped working.  When a new message arrives, the notification light starts blinking, but when I open the app, it deletes the message.  It also will not create an outgoing message.  I downloaded the mobile version of AWC cleaner but android refused to open it.  Not sure where to go from here, but sure sounds like a bit of malware.  Or simply something wrong with the email program.

John,
I'm using the mail program that came with the phone.  Interestingly its not listed in the Apps Manager, at all.  I have reboot several times and we are part way  there.  I am now receiving mail but if I try to send one or even in the process of writing a new message I get a simple error "Unfortunately, the mail program stopped."  Nothing else, no clue as to why.  I have tried to replace the one I am using with another copy and that didn't work either.  Maybe a trip to the local Vz store is warranted.

I tried to replace the mail program with another copy of itself.  Just moved a second copy to the home screen.  Didn't work.

That's a long story but the short answer is no.  My email account is provided by my ISP.  They used to let Gmail manage the account but Gmail stopped doing that and the ISP switched to a new program called Zimbra.  My phone mail app syncs to it.  I have an old Gmail account I use for trash protection but everything else uses the ISP account.

Bill, if you suspect malware you might try installing and running AVG Antivirus (or similar). If that does not fix it, then a trip to VZ may be in order.

As a last resort, resetting the phone might be your only option. Yes, that it as painful as buying a new phone and starting all over.

But generally when I buy a new phone VZ is able to post my phone book, etc to the new one.  I suspect they maybe able to do the same on a reset.  This is my only phone, no landline, and calling still works, so far.   I will try AVG as you suggest.

Are you not using Google to manage your contacts? If you are, then the contacts are saved on your Google account. I'm not sure that you can even save contacts on your Android smartphone without syncing it directly to your Google account.

I don't know, I'm not a very advanced phone user.  I think I recall that contacts are saved in the VZ cloud backup system.
I will see if I can figure it out.

Is there a mobile version of AVG for android? The web site sounds like not.

All better now. The outbound Imap password was missing.  Never had that problem before.  Maybe when Vz did an update?

I'm almost embarrassed to say, the Greeter at VZ store did it.
