As I understand the article you'll have to install the preview to a reformatted drive, and before Windows 10 launches at the end of July. That'll be your only grace to getting the free upgrade if you don't have Windows 7 or Windows 8.x preinstalled. I have a total of 3 Windows 7 licenses, so none of this is of concern to me.

I don't see the point of messing with the 32-bit version, though. I'm thinking only a small percentage of the populace even needs to consider it.

Scuzzy; waiting on the 128-bit version.

Yes, it still is the preview version. That is your only option right now. I imagine that once the gold version is released, you'll be able to upgrade through Windows Update.

I doubt the problem you're experiencing has anything to do a free upgrade that is not planned until the end of July. I have no idea how Microsoft will deal with this, if at all, but at worst they'll just plug the upgrade loophole.

Scuzzy; as opposed to plugging other types of holes.  :-X

I'm building a new system, so I'm not concerned what becomes of my current system. So it will be as easy as doing the upgrade through Windows Update.

Scuzzy; no big deal, even if it flubs.

JA, According to one of the recent issues of Windows Secrets, that is not actually true.  According to them any valid windows O/S is eligible for the upgrade during the year following July 29.  No reservation is necessary.

I don't keep the newsletters,  I did look through my trash folder but didn't see it, so my proof is gone.  Nonetheless my memory is not gone.

I removed my reservation on both of my systems. I am in no hurry whatsoever, even if just to try it.

Scuzzy; I might hold out for Windows 10 Billion.

The only kink in your wrench is that you may not get the update at the end of July. I recently read that only a small percentage will get the initial upgrade. I don't recall where I read the article, though.

Scuzzy; wrench kinker.

Then why download it at all?  Just for the sake of confirming your distaste?

My understanding is that a year after you d/l w10, if you want to keep it there will be a charge.  Nothing is free.  Given that is true, your d/l version will stop.

........" Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge."
So what happens when the "supported life time of the device" happens?  Or you switch devices?
Sounds like a purchase of the O/S will eventually be required.

Profit is an interesting question.  MS is not a munificent company.  And frankly I don't believe the MS hype about "everyone" using the same platform and the ease of software design that results.
