Hi, I am trying to set up 2 computers on the same home network and I need to share my C: drive

I followed multiple tutorials I found on the internet, but I just cannot do it.
Here is some background of what I have :

2 PC both with win7
Both computers are on the same workgroup called WORKGROUP
Both PC have a dedicate IP 192.168.1.160 & 192.168.1.170
They are connected directly to a switch with an RJ45 cable each

I shared the drive C drive on one PC, by right clicking and select share Share with --> Advanced sharing
than click advanced sharing again, select "Share this folder", give a name and click OK

Than I go to the other computer and map the drive I just shared,
however when I try to select the drive, I get the message:

Windows cannot access\\ name od computer and drive
You do not have permission to access \...\ Contact your network administrator

I am lost, any idea?

  • In an emergency, 9-1-1 calls ME.

Two things come to mind:

1. On the computer that gives you the error, go to the Control Panel
- Click Credential Manager (if you don't see this in your Control Panel main view, click the down arrow next to "View by" [upper right of your screen] and select "Small icons")
- Click "Add a Windows credential"
- Enter the network name of the computer you want to access (e.g., I named my main computer "Star")
- Enter the login user name for the computer you want to access
- Enter the password for the computer you want to access
- Save your work

2. If the above doesn't cut it, check to see if you have a 3rd party firewall. A 3rd party firewall can interfere with home networks unless you "white list" the computers.

Hi Scuzzy, thanks for the reply.
I kept digging in google, and I finally found the issue,
looks like that you need to create a user account on the host computer and one on the client computer
that have the same name and password.
Once you do this than it works, having the same workgroup is not enough

Thanks for looking into this

The login info & password on your host computer should be all you need on that end; no need to create anything else.

To create the info & password on the client computer, just follow the instructions I gave you.

I have never had to create additional user accounts on the host computer.
