My new build M/B does not allow me to transfer the legacy com port I've been using to run my HP 2100 Laser jet,  sooooooo anyone have a serious recommendation for a USB or wireless printer, but "wireless" must work as well as the Logitech M510 mouse.

This M/B does not have onboard wifi, if that matters, but does support USB3.  It also can be black and white, I have no use for color.

I'm partial to Brother laser printers. A wireless printer still requires setting up, but the process is fairly straight forward.

You didn't mention a price range, but here are some possible options at Amazon.

Really, Brother?  There was a time when they were much less than acceptable.

Brother has come around. For most consumers it's one of the better bets. I've had my HL-5280DW for about 3+ yrs and I'm very pleased with it.

I have looked at 2, one that Scuzzy found the HL 2270DW - $105 or HL 2240 D,  it's little brother (no pun intended) the HL 2240D $91.  Same machine size, weight printing specs, the DW has USB, Ethernet or wireless 802.11b/g , the D variety has only USB.

I have never had a wireless printer but being able to print from any of my 3 machines (assuming of course I get my desktop back!)  might be convenient.

Edit: I ordered the HL2270 DW from Amazon, delivery estimated for Friday next.

Printer arrived 2 days early from Amazon.

Set up took all of 10 minutes including loading the driver.  Works like a charm so far.

I have or have developed an annoying problem with this Brother printer.  It adds a small amount of curl to a printed page but not bad enough to stop using it.  However what is does to individual envelopes is not acceptable.  Using the dedicated feed slot for an envelope and printing one produces a product that is wrinkled and creased badly when it winds up in the paper tray.  I don't see any adjustments for this problem but am wondering if lightweight envelope  stock could be the problem.  I have been using the Walmart self-adhesive ones.
I think I recall there were heavier stock envelopes recommended for laser printers.
Anyone have any experience with this issue?

I mentioned I thought  it might be the envelope stock.  I don't have staples or office max locally but next time I go somewhere I'll check.  I also haven't checked walmart for a better grade of envelope, next trip.

There have been none.  Down here, at least for me, A/C is 24/7,  other choices are not close to acceptable!

  • In an emergency, 9-1-1 calls ME.

Bill,

That problem crops up a lot with laser printers of various brands, although some do better than others. My last laser printer (Samsung) had a pass-through for envelopes and card stock. By dropping a rear panel, the envelope would follow a somewhat straight path as it went though the printer.

My current Brother printer takes the envelope through a circular path, which results in some curling. However, we rarely have the problem that you describe. I have heard that self-sealing envelopes don't do well going through a circular path, but the 6-1/2" self-sealing that my wife uses ("@ the office" from Walmart) seem to do kinda okay. I prefer the legal size pro stock (non sealing), which have never given me problems. The current batch that I have is the Office Depot store brand, which is designed for laser printers.

As for the paper curling, we get a little bit of that with our current printer. But I have to admit that I've never give it a second thought, as it doesn't seem out of the ordinary for laser printers. FWIW we use Georgia-Pacific Premium MultiPurpose (20-lb) paper from Walmart. I don't recommend 16-lb, as that will invite curling.

Thanks Scuzzy.  I will try heavier stock envelopes.  I am already using Georgia Pacific Recycled  20lb Copier and Printer paper from Walmart.  My printer also has a drop down panel in the back but I didn't notice any instructions for using it for envelopes but certainly worth a try.  My HP laser had such a panel specifically for envelopes as well.

Bill

Edit: Well duh, I just watched a sales demo for this printer that I hadn't seen before and it highlights using the back panel for "straight through" printing for envelopes.  My bad.

I am happy to report that between the straight through printing path and, now, 20lb stock envelopes, the problem ahs been resolved to an acceptable level, not perfect, but much better.
