Your suggestions about emails for new topics poasted can be accomplished, I think, by opening a board like Electronics and on the 'tools' line there is a button labelled Notify which, again I think, will generate emails for new poasts, not just replies.

I just received an email notification for the new poast in the Electronics board, which tells me the suggestion above works!
