I checked the extra cables supplied with my Antec PSU after looking again at the GTX 980 card.  The photo appears to show one 8 socket connector in scuzzy's new build, or is it really 2 four socket connectors?  I have an unused cable with one connector to the PSU with three 4 socket plugs as if to power adjacent HDs, but no 8 socket connector.  Does that mean to use some version of the GTX ( I'm thinking EVGA GTX 960) i will also need a new PSU?

I just looked at the specs. of my current card, a GTX  550 TI, and it requires a 6 socket connector, which I guess answers my question.  Dang, I hope this doesn't become necessary.

  • In an emergency, 9-1-1 calls ME.

You're not really considering the $500+ GTX 980 card, are you? I'm guessing that's a typo.

My GTX 960 has an 8-socket connector. The original PSU cable on my build is a single 8-socket connector on the PSU end, and a dual 8-socket connector on the GPU end. I cut the second connector off of the cable as I will never have a second GPU card installed, and I did not want a connector just dangling around.

FWIW: My GTX 960 came with a power splitter, which converts a pair of 6-socket connectors to a single 8-socket.

No, the 980 was a typo.  But thanks for the information.  But even with the 960, I don't have a second 6-socket connector available to use the supplied converter.
I hope all this is academic, come on UPS, you're late!!

Let's hope it doesn't come to that. But in case it does, don't forget there are other GPU cards that will get by with a 6-socket connector.

Good thought, I just happen to like EVGA and am presently using a GTX variety.  Guess, if necessary, I can go shopping for something else.

Turns out there is an EVGA GTX 950 with the 6-pin format.   At least its there to be explored.
