  • In an emergency, 9-1-1 calls ME.

Bill...

While this is too late for your build, I came across an interesting website dedicated to PC building that aids in properly combining parts. This looks like a great resource for future builds:

PCPartPicker.com

While I didn't spend much time on the site, I noticed the "System Build" section identifies potential issues when mixing/matching parts. For example, when I combined a Samsung 960 EVO 250GB M.2 SSD with my ASUS Z97 Pro Wi-Fi  mobo I got the following compatibility note:

Quote
The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with a SATA Express port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA Express port is disabled.

I confess, my reaction to the PartsPicker revelation was: well yeah, we knew that.  I have known of the site but never actually used it.  I think, and I might be a bit jaded, that it is more for novice builders.  It does however have a feature that allows one to share your selection of parts with others for  "expert" opinions.
One of the tech sites I visit regularly refers folks there for suggestions for "what video card should I buy?"

Certainly worth keeping in the tool bag.

Either of us is fully capable of building awesome computers, as we've proven that time and time again. Regardless, I still find sites like this helpful. Partly because I sometimes have my head so far up my caboose that I miss the obvious.  ;D

The other thing I wanted to mention is I found a way to tell if the M-2 is using SATA or PCIe.  Looking at the BIOS, my SATA 1 shows as empty.  I'm fairly certain that if the M-2 was running SATA, the #1 port would be occupied.

I hope so, maybe the next generation of everything will remember that win 7 still exists, and is still popular :)
