new monitor
« on: Dec 02, 2013, 10:02 hrs »
I have been using a 22' Lenovo wide screen for over a year and feeling a bit cramped Just not quite big enough for side by side documents, etc.

And, considering it's Cyber-Monday........  Newegg has had several deals in their daily email blasts but I prefer Amazon but Newegg served to pique fmy interest.

I decided on  an  ASUS VS239H-P 23-Inch Full-HD LED IPS Monitor with 2 day shipping.  My first IPS vs. TN screen.

Nice find, Bill.

So I'm a little confused... did you make the purchase at Amazon or Newegg? Regardless, $163 is a nice price.

Amazon.  The return policy is much better, as I'm sure you know.  We'll see.  This is a semi-entry level for an IPS panel and the Dell Ultra is twice as expensive, and not certain I really need a $300+ monitor!

Update: For the first time Amazon/UPS missed a promised delivery date!  Must be the holidays.

The new Asus is now in service and it's brilliant with vivid  colors.  I am still fooling with the calibration which is a chore.  There are 5 (or 4?) preset modes and one user mode which allows you to set individual color components, contrast and brightness.  One of the issues I had was the color green which initially looked like pea soup.  I haven't yet gotten it perfected but it's improving.  It would probably help if I had a better understanding of the primary color chart but experimentation seems to be working.
The brightness on this panel is a little overwhelming and I turned it down to about 75%.  The contrast, when turned down seemed to quickly fade text so I turned that back up.
There is also a gizmo to help with calibration available but I haven't started looking yet.

Sure but  not on the web.  In person you just keep swiping the cards until it's paid.  CS might be your best bet, or go to the store if they have it in stock.

And so? Are you using one of the pre-set modes or did you calibrate and how do you like it???

I'm glad you like it.  I flipped through the preset modes and didn't see anything that I liked particularly.  So I am using the User mode and fiddled for days adjusting the calibration.  But once I got to an acceptable picture, I haven't touched it since.  You will do better than I if you decide to try it.

To be honest, I don't even remember which button are which.  And I'm reluctant to fiddle with it.

When you get to a machine that has the proper resolution, try Virtual pool on it for a new perspective.

Well don't get too excited. I suspect a new version is on the way, given how long this one has been out and the rather sharp price drop to clear out old stock.

JA, I really don't know, I haven't used VGA in a very long time.  I switched to DVI with the advent of dual monitors 10- 12 years ago.  I've had maybe 4-5 video cards in that time and all were DVI output., most without VGA.  My current card is EGVA with dual DVI cables and no VGA.  The DVI advantage is physical size, two DVI ports fit in the space for one VGA and the cables are thinner.
DVI was touted as 'better' than VGA, sharper, cleaner, quicker.  but I really doubt if is significant enough to notice.  IIRC Scuzzy's dual monitor setup uses one VGA cable and one HDMI out of a laptop.  Maybe he can comment.

When you've been around as long as I have, you tend to form opinions, notice I didn't learn anything.
