Fiber
« on: Feb 19, 2015, 16:24 hrs »
My neighborhood has been converted to Fiber optic and my connection was completed today.  I've been paying for and getting good download speed but the upload was terrible.

Since the conversion: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4156127394

That's an awesome upload, but I would have thought your download speed would be higher. What are the rates, if you don't mind my asking?

The basic package, with fiber, includes 10 up and 10 down at approximately $40.00. I pay an extra $5.00 per month for what was 15 down and 2 up.  I haven't looked closely at a bill in a while, it's an all inclusive package-telephone, HD TV with some expanded channel access but no movie channels like HBO, and internet, with taxes and fees it runs about $180/ month.

It's only a dream, but I hope to someday get the option for genuinely "fast" internet around here. I've been fairly happy with my ISP, but it has not always been the most reliable connection. Recently, my speeds have been low for some reason.

With taxes and equipment rental, I pay a $67 monthly for 20 down/4 up. Nothing else is included, such as phone/TV, etc. For phone service I use Ooma, which has been absolutely awesome. I would not return to a POTS line if it was free. For TV, I only use OTA as I have for the last 20 years.

My internet connection is normally consistent and close to what I pay for. As of late, it has been less than ideal. I checked when I first started this reply and I was getting 8 down. I just checked again and it's now much closer to the 20/4 I'm pay for:

So roughly close.  My ISP offers speed as high as 50 or 100 up but rather expensive for a home connection.  But, my ISP is the only wired TV and internet option available.  The only other choice is Dish or Direct TV neither of which have great local reputations.  And I'm not willing to give up HDTV and the broad channel access for OTA offerings.

The other consideration is dropping the phone service which I really don't need but that would break the "bundle" raising costs and saving little net, net.
