I got directv and with it the dvr that holds 1tb recording storage. This ain't much. In just 2 weeks its 70% full. They offer an added dvr with 500 mb for $100. They don't say how to hook this up though & I haven't called them yet. Is there a way to add a lot more storage space to record movies and documentaries from directv and be able to play them on the tv?

chopin1397,
If you're really serious about movie and other media storage, you might want to check out network attached storage systems or NAS.
I do not have a working knowledge nor do I know if you can go DVR > NAS.  But NAS offers massive storage capability, typically linked to computers via network.

Thanks I'll check those out and let you know. They give you 3 months of free movies from hbo and others. There are so many to record they eat up the space. Also, a lot of great documentaries from the science and natgeo wild channels.

I has also sent an email to directv about this & this is their reply I just got:

I see that you have the HR34 receiver. This receiver has a 1 Terabyte hard drive or up to 200 hours of HD recording. You can increase the recording capacity of your HD DVR simply by connecting an external hard drive with greater storage than the receiver's internal hard drive. You will need an external hard drive that uses an eSATA connection. The following hard drive models are recommended:

-Western Digital 500GB (model WDG1S5000)
-Western Digital 1TB (model WDG1S10000)
-Seagate 1TB (model ST31000SCA109-RK)
-Seagate 500GB (model ST30500SCA109-RK)

Any recommendations here? I hope I can find one with more than 1tb but not prohibitively expensive.

Try Amazon and/or Newegg.  I was a longtime fan of Newegg but have basically switched to Amazon for faster shipping and easier returns.
