This morning I had no internet access and the light pattern on the Router (netgear Rangemax) was completely different.  I rebooted the modem and the router and the light pattern was back to normal and the systems reported access - until I tried to actually go to a web site.  At that point everything reported no access.
I went through this cycle three times, all with the same result.  I finally wired the desktop directly to the modem and powered down the router.

This router is 2 years old and my impression is it need to be replaced.  Anyone agree?

I agree that the router is the problem. But before you completely give up, find out how to do a hard reset.

For example, my Linksys requires that I hold the reset button for 30 seconds. This hard reset will put the modem back to factory settings; password and all.

If that doesn't resolve the problem, then a new modem is in order.

Rebooting is not sufficient. It requires an actual hardware reset, which cannot be accomplished through the IP address or any software.

With my Linksys, pressing the reset button once merely reboots it. Getting it to back to the factory settings requires a "hard reset" as explained in my last post.

Better yet Bill, consider a "30-30-30 hard reset". This requires that you hold the reset button for a total of 90 seconds. Do not release the reset button between steps. If that doesn't work, then the router is ready for the recycle bin.

Scuzzy; or mail it to Ace.

I'm happy to report the new router is up and the notebook wireless is working.   I had to sort out the security protocol
probably because of the notebook's age but its working.  ):

I tried the straight hard reset.  When that didn't work, I quit fiddling.  I have a low 'fiddlin' threshold.
The new router ( NetGear 3500) was about half of what I paid 2 years ago.  I looked at a dual channel one but I don't have anything that uses n,
and the 5 mhz channel was a and n only.
