My notebook runs XP Pro and uses a wireless connection for the net.  The win7 system could not see the notebook.  I set up a workgroup on both machines with the same name, rebooted both.  Now win7 sees the XP but cannot connect or add XP to the network.  Win 7 provides the following error: The network path was not found.

What am I missing?

This problem doesn't warrant spending money on it, but thanks.  There is a simple step somewhere I simply missed.  I'm trying really hard not to screw something else up!  I had enough difficulty setting up the notebook's wireless connection in the first place.

  • In an emergency, 9-1-1 calls ME.

I struggled with Windows 7's built in Homegroup, or whatever the heck it's called. It gave me nothing but heartaches and I finally disabled it. Once that was done, all my network heartaches disappeared.

If you want to disable Homegroup, this link might be helpful.

Thanks, but I'm not using Homegroup and both Homegroup services are disabled.  When I click on the Computer link to Homegroup it asks if I wish to set one up.  My understanding is that Homegroup only works when all systems are win7.  Workgroup is supposed to allow systems with different OSs to be added to the Workgroup net.

As is it now, win7 detects the notebook XP pro but cannot find the network path to it and can't add it to the network map.

I would run the windows 7 network wizard but am afraid it will mess up the notebooks wireless access to the web, which I struggled to establish.

Well I'm getting closer.  When I click on the notebook in the network map, Windows ask for a network password to access the XP notebook. The only password I have on any machine is for the Router login and that doesn't  work in this situation.

Suggestions?

yes, I tried that, didn't work.  I'm now looking for the password location or a setting that I can disable.
