On my home network I have one computer that gives me slow file transfers to the others. All computers have great internet speeds. Of course the Public folders are set for sharing as well as Music, Video, Picture and Download folders.

Here's my setup,

Computer 1 Wired, also has an external hard drive connected and the printer. The printer is set for sharing and all systems can access it and print just fine. The external drive is set for sharing and all systems can access it just fine. Can access all files from 2 and 4 very slow from 3.

Computer 2 Wired, can access all files on 1 and 4 very slow from 3.

Computer 3 Wired, can access all files from 2, 1 and 4 with good speed. This is the one that the others can't access well. It shows up in the others network, but getting it to transfer files takes forever to start and then transfer is agonizingly slow.

Computer 4 Wireless, Can access 1 and 2 slow from 3.

So, I can't figure out why Computer 3 is slow to the others on the network while there is no slowdown to it from the others. I've checked all the setting across the network and they are the same from one to the other. I've checked the router settings and see nothing wrong there, I've turned off the firewall and Real Time protection in MS Security Essentials and that had no effect. I've reinstall network card drivers and just about everything I can think of except try a different network card and cable. The cable is not so easy to change, but I suppose I could bring the computer 3 over closer and use a shorter cable.

Just looking for any ideas here that I might be missing.

Edit, I also have an ipod touch connected with wireless. It sits in a base station and my wife uses it as a radio. It's on most of the time, but I don't see how or if it would effect the other systems.

We have a similar problem at work, but it's because of an older NIC card that's being used. The only other thing I can think of is security software settings, but you seem to have covered that base already.

You could try switching computers at that location, assuming it's not too much effort. If the problem continues, you'll be able to narrow it down.

Just out of curiosity, how far is 3 located from the others?  You said its wired, long cable or local access point?

Thanks for replies,

Possible to be dirty pins, but they look good and that motherboard is less than 3 months old.

Cable is a 20 ft, have another to another system that is 50 and it works fine, but even the 20 has great download speeds to that system in question.

Yes, I suppose it is time to swap out some computers and/or cables and see what happens.

I connected my laptop to the cable over by the slow computer and it was fine, so the cable must be not the problem.

I did a little further digging at the AsRock website and came across the X-fast lan utility/driver, downloaded and installed and it seems to have cleaned up my troubles. Honestly this utility has more settings than I understand at this point, but I'll go through it all in time. But for now looks like I'm good.

The only real down side to the slow uploads to other computers on the network from that one is that sometimes I'll record a show that I'd like to move to another system and that was a real bottleneck.

I think so, here is a link to my Motherboard.
970 Extreme3

It shows it as an AsRock utility, however other brands use Realtek lan chips and it may work on other boards. It shows the xfast utility as a utility, however after install it said drivers had been updated. So, not sure if just a utility or utility and driver package.

  • Push it to the Limits!

I wonder if the problem had something to do with qos settings and that the driver maybe changed the qos settings and that is what fixed it.
